A war chest was literally a chest in the barracks where weapons and armor were kept back around the inception of the term. In the here and now in business it refers to funds or materials set aside for acquisitions or to defend against take overs. I mostly hear it when people talk about campaigning politicians. exmpl Hillary Clinton has 150 million dollars in her war chest.
