The problem was how they said the series was old and outdated when it wasn't and making fun of it in the game itself was unacceptable. That is where they failed in my eyes.

It is never a good idea to make fun of your fans or to insult them. This reminds me of "the order" as well where the developers brought that 24fps cinematic BS. If you spit on your fans, they will spit back on you. It's an important lesson for developers.

It's just a joking reference to the rest of the series. Literally no other fanbase was so out of touch and offended by a simple joke. It's just a misunderstanding, simple as t hat. Ironically enough, the character gets white hair by the end of the game anyways, and Nero's hair in DMCV is almost the exact same as Dmc Dante's White hair in the end of the game. 

He gets white hair but it isn't the same hairstyle. And yes, Nero is like him, but it was a jab at DMC3, a very popular title. He says: "Not in a million years". Well, turns out it didn't take that many to go back to it with DMC5.

It's disrespectful of the source material. For a "joke" it wasn't the right one to make with the already existing controversy envyronment.

Honestly, if they didn't have that defiant attitude the game would've done better. The thing is they made themselves easy to dislike when they bring the hate from the internet sphere to the actual game.
