They have the eyes. What's not to say that they are the decomposing heads of Toads? Or the result of a genocidal war where all the white and red-dotted toads chopped off the heads of the red and white-dotted toads and stuffed them in boxes throughout the kingdom? That's gonna taste nasty.
I try not to think of the Mario lore too much.
