I feel very similar to you. This is actually exactly what I wanted, realistically. But more than I dared to hope for. I always said I wanted them to keep every character from Smash 4, but since they don't traditionally do that, I figured chances were slim to none, unless this was Smash 4 Deluxe. But it looks more like Smash 4 Deluxe Turbo Ultra Royal Edition+. It has pretty much everything I'd want from a traditional new Smash game, minus the fact that they put less focus on new characters and stages, and it seems to use the same engine. Every character seems to have some tweeks to their moves, and Zelda even got what appears to be an overhaul to her character model and animations. She previously got one of her moves replaced when she could no longer transform into Shiek, but instead got a move from Phantom Hourglass. Now it seems like she can transform into Shiek again? (I hope not). Either way, her new makeover looks awesome. I'm not sure how Breath Link differs from Twilight Link though. Need to re-watch the trailer.
There are tweeks to systems like air dodges, UI enhancements showing icons that indicate meter/items. New items, and new pokemons. I was mainly worried that Lucina wouldn't return because she's a clone character, and may get replaced for the next new relevant Fire Emblem character instead, and Cloud because he's (probably) an expensive license to renew for a new I.P. But all of them are back, plus the stages from the 3DS version, and every character to have ever appeared in a Smash game. Even though none of them interest me personally, I'm sure that decision lead to some of my favorites from Smash 4 to still remain in this game, so I'm grateful for that. (Zelda, Lucina, Rosalina, Palutena, Marth, Zero Samus, Cloud.) And I know that decision will make a lot of fans happy.
On top of that, the fact that they added Ridley, dash canceling, punishment for rolling too much, perfect shield being more more risky/skill based, and omega battlefield shows that they seem to be listening to fans. (In fact Sakurai did say that Ridley was added because there was an outcry for him. In particular from western fans.)
This game alone makes me want to pick up a Switch in December.
And I also wanted to rate the E3 presentation highly because of Smash, but I can understand why a lot of people were upset at how much time it took up. For me I'd be fine if they spent the entire presentation showing nothing but Smash.
I'm really happy about Zelda's redesign though.
