I do agree that it’s pretty hard to see these new film as part of the canon that’s Episodes I-VI because the overarching story doesn’t really fit after VI. Again this is where Rogue One does things right because that one fits seemlessly with IV. The old Expanded Universe did a better job at portraying what happens after the Empire fell.
