That's actually not true. SW is a WW phenomenon. Even back in the 70s and 80s, with a much smaller foreign market, the OG trilogy pulled in big numbers outside of the US. Still, Solo did about half of what they were expecting everywhere. They were expecting $300M WW, but ended up with $148.3M WW. 

Yes it's WW phenom. Meaning, it makes money WW. But it's about a 50/50 split. Infinity war for example is like 33/66 split
