first of all, understand this - part of what made Xenoblade great was its underdog status. nobody saw the game coming, and that only seemed to multiply the enjoyment people were able to take from it.so when you start playing Xenoblade 2, you will have some higher expectations. that being said..

the battle mechanics work a bit differently, it feels weird at first but learning how each element of the battle system works in amazingly fun and rewarding. IMO, Xenoblade 2 has better battle mechanics than 1 and X by far. you dont just have to sit around waiting idly for your arts to fill up again, and there are special elemental combos that can be fun to mess around with.

the story is a bit shorter, or so ive found. ive played through Xenoblade twice with both runs lasting around 90 hours. Xenoblade 2 took me around 70. im not complaining at all though. Xenoblade 2 in every imaginable aspect has a story that rivals the level of the original (and my god will you love the ending). although to my surprise, it has more of an anime feel than Xenoblade 1, with some exaggerated facial expressions and more witty banter than expected. i thought it was fun, not what i was expecting, but i did enjoy the story. and just like in the first game, each character has their own quirk that makes for some great interactions with the group, and this time around everyone isnt just trying to avenge their dead boyfriend/girlfriend, so that releases some of the tension.

as for the music, i felt it was amazing. here, take a listen to this -
