I have a different take on this
You have a lot of very uncreative people currently in Hollywood, with no particularly good, original ideas for movies. So what do they do? Well they go into their old bag of established franchises that they know have made good money in the past, and think to themselves "hey, lets just do a new spin on this!" It just so happens that one very basic, easy thing to change is the gender or race of a character, and then they think that alone justifies the existence of a new movie.
So a lot of times, I honestly think it's less about them wanting to force diversity, as it is about their inherent laziness.
