Definitely not, Gen 5's are atrocious on the whole. Ice cream cones, garbage bags, goth kids, monkey stoners, roadkill fish, legendary genies? What the hell??? I'm still mind boggled all these years later that most of those designs ever saw the light of day. And that's not even mentioning all the ones that are literal ripoffs of the gen 1ers. Gen 2 and 4 have always been a tad on the forgettable side for me, even though they're not bad. 3 and 6 have the best designs by far in terms of quality and creativity, then I'd go with 1. Sure some of the ones the OP mentioned are pretty lame, but overall the simplicity of that gen was done very well and given just enough flair to avoid being boring in most cases. Pikachu is the perfect example of that, and most are more Pikachu than Ekans. They're memorable for a reason, because on the whole they're simple but well done.
