You can disagree with him. I do, but the idea of stating a character shouldn't be who they are because you don't like them is not a valid criticism to me.

It is criticism which goes against the villian. Thanos drives the whole plot, and he has no reason for doing so. That is what makes him a bad villain. 

His reason is he believes life left unchecked will ruin itself.  He saw it happen to his own people.  He has seen his efforts actually work. Gamora's planet is a paradise according to the movie a generation after the massacre of half the population.
