They are little applications you can add to the browser to suit your needs. For example AdBlock Plus is a very important addon that everyone should have, as it blocks every type of ads. I also have one (gTranslate), thast allows me to highlight any text and translate it with Google Traductor. I also have NoScript, it blocks Javascript, hence it improves security, but it can be a bit troublesome because you have to allow manually Javascript for every site. My advice is that you go to the add-on site and browse a bit, you'll for sure find something you want.
