Yea, I never understood why he was always lauded as so talented when he didn’t write anything (he got a writing & producing credit when he added one of his signature grunts or ‘he he’s’) or produce any of his music. He always had a producer, writer, and choreographer. These are, in essence, the actual inventive talents. MJ was just following orders. Prince could write, produce, dance, and play every instrument known to man - he was a true gifted talent. |
Whoa whoa WHOA...hold on for a second and just be careful with what you write. I have BOOKS on MJ and have more info on him than the average person. MJ had nothing but MUSIC in his head. In fact, he had an orchestra in his mind. He can elaborate melodies to fellow musicians even if he wasn't the greatest musician or could not play any instruments. He could create melodies through his voice.
Yeah, he needed producers in order to get his ideas translated into actual instruments. But man, he already had demos of stuff like Billie Jean, Beat It and We Are The World (yes, he freaking wrote that song himself but humble enough to give Ritchie some credit for a few lines) long before they were delivered to the studio. MJ ALWAYS recorded all his demos himself. Rough drafts. You can even hear all of them in his boxsets.
The greatest Michael Jackson song for me ever will ALWAYS be Who Is It off Dangerous. Completely written by himself. It's a highly under rated masterpiece.
Other tracks like Black or White, Billie Jean, Beat It, 95% of Bad, Heal the World, Earth Song, They Don't Care About Us...HECK, most of his HUGE hits are pretty much entirely his songs. Yeah, sure he doesn't play on them but that doesn't mean he couldn't write them.
HE directs his repertoire of musicians. If he doesn't like something, he'll let them know for sure. He is so critical of his albums and usually takes up to 5 years for an album to release. Most artists release albums every year or two on average I'd say. He didn't have many albums compared to top sellers like The Beatles, Elvis or even Garth Brooks. But every album he released was a worldwide smash hit. Anyway, he definitely had full control of his albums after BAD when Quincy left. But even with QJ, he co-produced the tracks he wrote.
Honestly, you don't have to be a musician to write a song. You just have to be creative and come up with a melody. It always starts out with a melody in your head. Just like MJ said...you gotta be able to hum it.
