February 2016 Thread

February 2013 Thread

No big changes since the last thread.

I upgraded from GTX 970 to GTX 1070 for €250 in September 2016. And I added another internal 4 TB HDD and an external 5 TB HDD because I bought a lot of PC games and don't like to delete stuff. ;)

Before that, I upgraded my GTX 580 to GTX 970 for €200 in September 2014.

Most other components are still of my PC build from October 2013:

  • Haswell i5-4670K
  • ASUS Gryphon Z87 mainboard
  • 16 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 250 GB SSD
  • 4 TB HDD

And the rest of my PC is even older: the PC case is an unobtrusive "black box" from Cooler Master without those fancy LED lights:

My two monitors are from 2007 and 2011, both with their advantages and disadvantages.

My good old Dell 2407WFP from 2007 (16:10, 1920x1200, S-PVA panel, 60 Hz) is still my main display. It has better color accuracy, better viewing angles, better black level and a (slightly) higher resolution than the other monitor. Therefore it is used for most non-gaming tasks and most "slow" games.

The Acer GN245HQ (16:9, 1920x1080, TN panel, 120 Hz, integrated IR transmitter for 3D vision) is the specialist for stereoscopic gaming (2 x 60 Hz) or fast games (120 Hz). If I need more screen space (mostly for Excel), I can use both displays together in extended desktop mode:

I thought about upgrading my monitors this year, but I'm still waiting for models with all features I want (G-Sync + HDR10 + at least 1440p + at least 144 Hz).

So I went to VR gaming instead this year, which is a much bigger change in immersion than a new monitor with higher resolution and a higher dynamic range:

Still no internal changes since last time.

I'm still happy with my GTX 1070 from 2016 and my mainboard/CPU/RAM from 2013 and a lot of much older (but still reliable) components.

But I finally bought a new monitor that has almost all the features I wanted (except HDR): a Dell S2716DG with G-Sync, 1440p and up to 165 Hz.

It replaced my Acer GN245HQ (which I gifted to my brother) as specialist for stereoscopic gaming and fast games and is also my new main display. My good old Dell 2407WFP from 2007 is now the companion display for extended desktop mode and had to take a step to the right.

Both Dells are a good fit (despite the age difference of a decade), they even have the same height:

I haven't decided where to go from here. Now that I have a specialist for fast games (G-Sync, up to 165 Hz, 1 ms response time), maybe I replace the old Dell monitor with a specialist for slower but pretty games: a 4K IPS-display with HDR10 with 60 Hz.
