True, and movies being available for stramings soon after release doesmdo help either, especially with high ticket prices.

Yet Avatar managed to make close to $3 billion worldwide and no other movie even comes close to kicking it off #1 (not including inflation.) It was in 2009 - entertainment was no different really than it is now. Bottomline is, if the movie calls for it people WILL go to the cinema to see it. It has to be a particular movie, though.

I honestly thought TFA would be the ONLY movie to come close to beating Avatar yet it didn't even come close either. Anyway, I doubt IW will beat TWA's worldwide. If it does then seriously WOW!

Yea, but Avatar had a HUGE advantage over any other film.  3D.  It was the beginning of the new version of 3D in theaters and Avatar was completely hyped and promoted around that tech.  So, A LOT of its tickets were for the 3D version, which means inflated ticket prices.  It was also the emergence of the newly growing Chinese market, so that helped push it, too.  It just became an event movie based on that.

Which really makes me laugh to think Cameron believes he can turn Avatar into the next SW or MCU.  The 2nd one will probably be down at least $1B from the 1st, if not more.  It just won't have the 3D hype, plus its a decade too late for it to capitalize on the success of the 1st one.
