For the fiscal year the 3DS platform generated gross sales of 188 Billion Yen = appx $1.7 Billion USD (current exchange rate). Even if the 3DS line only does half of that next year, you are still talking about $800 million or so in gross revenue.

The 3DS is still a great option for younger kids, and the install base in general is still large. And it's not like the software titles they are putting out on 3DS are placing heavy demands on Nintendo. However, I could see Nintendo reducing the number of hardware SKUs as sales decline.

Apple still sell iPods on their website, so I don't see why Nintendo can't keep the 3DS in production for awhile!
