It's also a series that values consistency and refinement over bold new directions, and none of the mainline games have had disappointing sales, so there's no motivation for drastic changes. Animal Crossing has a realistic chance. Wild World and New Leaf sold similar numbers, so a sequel with more possibilities can grow the IP further. Metroid Prime 4 has the lowest hurdle to clear, but I am completely uncertain about its chances. What is known is that Retro Studios isn't the developer of the game, so it's likely that development will be Japan-based in which case Yoshio Sakamoto will have his hands in it. That guy's idea of what Metroid is supposed to be put the IP on hold for a good while. It was also him who declared Metroid Prime as a spinoff series. Fans of the IP obviously disagree and this shows how big the disconnect is. The original Metroid Prime launched at the same time as Metroid Fusion a.k.a. Metroid 4 a.k.a. Sakamoto's take, and Prime won the sales battle handily. Sakamoto has a reason to hold a grudge against Metroid Prime, so part 4 could be his attempt to fix what Retro broke. Long story short: Metroid Prime 4 could be another Metroid: Other M. I wasn't a fan of Samus Returns either, so I have no confidence in Metroid Prime 4 restoring the IP to its former glory when I haven't seen anything of the game yet. |
Yoshio Sakamoto isn't involved with the Prime series - Kensuke Tanabe is in charge of that series and will remain in charge for Prime 4.
