Spider-Man: Homecoming: 8/10
I want to preface this by saying that I adore the first 2 Sam Raimi movies and am able to enjoy the third one. They have such a tremendous amount of care and passion put into them and nothing in that series feels corporate or manufactured. Those movies were essentially my childhood and I loved the direction they took with portraying Peter as a character who has to go through immense struggles, yet still has the willpower to make sacrifices in order to be Spider-Man. I was extremely sad that they cancelled Spider-Man 4 and I hated the 2 Spider-Man movies that followed. When this character was announced to be in the creative control of Marvel, I was still somewhat skeptical. After Civil War and Spider-Man Homecoming, I can say that I am excited to see where this character goes again. This movie is so wonderfully done and takes an entirely different and creative approach from other Spider-Man movies. I love that they portrayed a Spider-Man that loved being a superhero but was uncomfortable as Peter Parker. Tom Holland was amazing at playing both and I really empathized with him along his struggle to become accepted as a professional superhero. Everything is so small scale and grounded and it correlates perfectly with how Peter exaggerates every event that goes on throughout the movie. I love the fact that there are very little stakes since it helps to show that Peter is still a developing superhero who needs guidance in order to grow as a character. The high school setting was incredibly authentic and was the best part of the movie. Pretty much all of the humor worked for me and added to that light tone that this movie succeeds at portraying. Its such an easygoing and unique movie that you can just sit back and enjoy pretty much everything that's happening. There isn't an attempt at setting up for other movies or trying to make the movie much bigger than it actually is. Its just a light and fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and knows how to have fun with itself. The editing is also very well done. They use quick cuts for humor very effectively. This movie also has a great villain. The Vulture is just a guy that gets mad that he loses his job and wants revenge because he can't provide for his family. He doesn't want to kill Peter and doesn't really want to hurt anybody else besides Tony Stark. My complaints come down to the technical side of the movie. I thought some of the shots looked amateur in a framing sense. There was a shot where Peter was testing out his web shooters and it focused on his legs instead of the environment or his body. The CGI for Spider-Man looked really fake but the CGI for the Vulture looked great. I love the fact that this movie is fun, but it didn't make as a strong of an impact on me that the emotional moments in the original trilogy made. A little more focus on the struggles he faces and just a little bit more heart might have made me relate to his conflict more. I know many people don't have this issue, but I personally would have liked to see Peter struggle as a character more. I guess that's what the sequel will be for. Despite that, this is a really unique and a really fun movie that I think most people can enjoy
