Fighting offline against Lvl 9 computers can help you out but you'll learn much faster online.
I hardly ever used my shield before I got online because I could easily crush computers without it but fighting with people here I quickly found out it was a necessity.
I never spot dodged before playing against Shizzlee but once I saw how effective it could be I started including it into my gameplay (although I don't always use it when I should yet).
