Preliminary support, used to port Snake Pass, was in place with 4.15 in February 2017.  4.16 released in May brought full support. https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/launch-your-game-on-the-nintendo-switch-with-unreal-engine-4-16

Epic has also been responsive to devs needing assistance and the support has been refined since.

Indeed, and Square-Enix did mention that they have been in touch with both Epic and Nintendo to help sort their issues.

They did say that but that's precisely why people are confused and frustrated.  When did they start these discussions?  When 4.16 launched?  When the PS4 version went gold?  Those are 11 and 9 months ago respectively, so where's the progress?  Why won't they show it?  Or did they start work very recently?  Cause that would be quite an alarming discovery.  No matter how you slice it, it's not a good look.  Either they have made progress but refuse to share it for whatever reason or they have none because they just started in which case what were they doing from the 4.16 on?  Waiting for the PS4 version to go gold?  Ok so what about since then?

Like I said, it's not that PS4 got it first, that makes sense.  But the fact an unsupported engine like idTech 6 designed explicitly for taking maximum advantage of the PS4 and Xbone will have 2 ports on Switch before an Unreal Engine 4 game that is far from the most demanding game built with that engine is quite a confusing annoyance.  The fact that at this rate they will both be out before we even have a screenshot of the Switch version of DQXI is baffling.

And also, unjust or no, this kind of treatment of the version also makes people increasingly concerned that it's going to be a bad port with minimum effort.  I personally don't believe that, I think Square is just being the same company that *still* hasn't finished Kingdom Hearts 3.  But it's a feeling a lot are going to have.  Transparency would go a hundred mikes towards smoothing things over.
