Does it matter though? People don't need to prove they're hardcore or anything. What matters is just enjoying whatever game you get, and if that helps people enjoy it all the more, then that's pretty cool in my book.

It depends of implementation.

If it's Save anywhere like usual Save and Quit, and when you die your save game reflects that by overwriting that only save slot and that's it, that's just convinience and that's ok...otherwise, not so much.
