There is that theory [see: coincidence] that the most popular team loses because the "better" players are on the other team. Hasn't been as much of a thing in Splatoon 2 as 1, since they redid how scoring works. But, winning both Solo and Team and losing Popularity has happened. Then again, so has a total knock-out.

It probably was coincidence but in Splat1 I always tried to pick the side I thought would be least popular because it seemed to work out that way so often.
