There were many, there was a recent aricle which claimed the XBox 360 had the most hyped launch beating even the hype of the Wii launch. The hype was effective as the XBox 360 did amazingly well for North America, I guess consumers weren't and many still aren't well aware of the reliability issues or hoped Microsoft would fix this problem well enough in newer consoles. But not so much here in Europe, many European consumers are now well aware of the XBox 360 problems, sales are slowing down considerably while normally sales would pick up as the XBox 360 games library is now pretty mature (but IMO still lacking varierty).
The PS3 is really a long term product which IMO cannot be judged based on short term sales figures. At some point the PS3 (maybe a slimline product) will likely take over from the PS2 and there will be many exclusive games available showing off why the Cell processor and a Blu-Ray drive is of added value.
