I don't think it had anything to do with that.  I think the problem is the game mechanic they chose.  Instead of having health bars, the round was won by the person who had the most Supers that successfully hit.  It just didn't feel like a real fighting game.  I guess they did it to differentiate themselves from Smash.  I have no idea why, though, as Smash isn't exactly original itself.  And health bars have been a staple of fighting games since the beginning of that genre.
