I dont have the cold hard numbers on actual cost per unit if that is what you mean but its a simple conclusion to make that since Sony exists solely to make money for its shareholders and not as a charity any move it makes has a profit motive as an end. The day Sony introduced the Pro naturally sounded a death knell for the older version.

It is also drawing from other companies who introduced mid gen refreshes like the N3Ds.

Isnt the typical rule of thumb, the older a model gets the cheaper it is to manufacture? I'd think their profit margin is higher on the slim model considering it's older tech, scaled down from the original PS4, and still selling at $299 msrp.

I can eventually see the pro model being the volume seller, a scaled down, slim version, like what 2DSXL is to the 3DSXL. And then a super slim PS4 model for the budget gamers ala 2DS.

I don't think Japan's stock problems are/were artificial, I think Sony knows Japan isnt as high priority as the U.S. or Europe and didnt want to have surplus stock after the MHW fever wore off IMO. Which we see in recent Japan hardware sales, PS4 already back down to baseline.

Not 'Always' true as diminishing returns set in at some point and there is the added cost of running 2 products with significant differences in terms of volumes, parts availability e.t.c. You can be certain Sony would incur less costs making a single SKU of 30m than making 2 SKUs of 15 million each no matter the efficiencies they find in the manufacturing lines. The day the Pro was announced was an Obituary of sorts for the older models......Do you see the older 3DS models around anymore these days ?

By the way, I am not of the opinion that the stock problems are artificial, only saying there exists more plausible reasons to suggest such conspiracy theories in the case of the PS4 compared to the switch . It is also worth considering that even if the stock shortages in Japan are not artificial, they still might have arisen due to allocation of manufacturing resources between the older version(s) and the Pro.
