PS2 won that gen hard, and it was still a fantastic time to own a Playstation.
Importance of competition is overblown imo.

Switch does look fun though (games catalog comeing along), and will probably be picking one up at some point.

To be fair, arrogance usually manifests after extremely successful generations.  The PS3, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo not caring about Final Fantasy leaving.  Sony and Nintendo both making their consoles harder to program on in order to making porting more difficult.  All of that came about because each thought they were in a highly favorable position.
