I get a feeling critics don't care for video games or animation.

not the case. critics nowdays are looking for movies where there isn't a lot of guns. they want movies with a lot of talking. visually stunning movie. actually. for the most part. just visually stunning

there is no reason to even have a story that has an impact on anything. it can be nonsense. unless its marvel if you want to make a movie. do not make a comedy movie unless you are using a british accent because apparently the British are the gold standard of funny nowdays (yeah its sad.) and Gravity and  2049  and dunkirk are apparently good movies . the shock on my face after watching gravity . what was even the impact of any of these movies on the universe they were in? its like am watching a documentary.

just have a movie that looks visually nice. and have a writer that can make very cringle and super official conversations. have a good sound team and you're good. 80% plus on metacricic and rotten tomatoes.

they just want something extremely hipster and strange.  or if you are a part of an established franchise you get an easy high rating. have you seen the rise of planet of the apes movies. they are fucking atrocious.

just look at rotten tomaates top list for last year :  https://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/?year=2017

more than half of these movies only your art gallery nerd will watch.

if you are expecting good reviews to a heavy action movie. you will not get them.

Thor was a great movie. it got good reviews. am okay with that obviously. but as someone who watched  wonder woman. the movie was pretty pathetic even for Marvel's formulaic standards. none of it really made sense and it wasn't as visually appealing as any of the marvel movies.

oh. an another easy way to get a good review. make your movie centered around ethnic groups or anyone that isn't a Caucasian.

like can you count how many movies in that list is about the struggle of the african americans in the previous century. there are a handful. which are too many for any single subject

while I do agree that no video game movie was ever good. movie reviewers still generally give relatively good review scores. the problem is that they force political agenda  with their reviews. we don't get that many action movies anymore.
