You asked about software recommendations:
I'm all about a mix of a few big Nintendo games along with cheap indie games. I'd recommend Mr. Shifty and Axiom Verge. Both are like $15 or $20 and a lot of fun. Mr Shifty only takes like 4-5 hours to beat though it is fun to occasionally come back to. When I got my Switch I got Zelda, Mario Kart, and Mr Shifty and barely even played the first two for the first few days until I had beat Mr Shifty. Axiom Verge is just a great Metroidvania game.
Obviously Mario which you said you're gonna get. Mario Kart is good. Splatoon 2 is a lot of fun for online action.
There are a bunch of other indie games that look good but I haven't played them so can't personally recommend them.
