It's usually a pretty severe violation of trust and needs to be handled as such - and this is coming from someone who's not very strict about traditional morals. This is just about trust and showing some basic respect for the other party. For all I care, even open relationships are fine as long as both parties have agreed to it, but cheating is far from fine.
