I don't think its out of the possibility that it can be a new game that utilizes assets from Smash Wii U/3DS. Pretty much every game after 64 utilized assets from the previous game. Splatoon 2 is a sequel despite not having much drastic changes compared to its predecessor, besides Clam Blitz, new weapons, new stages, Salmon Run, a new campaign, and the upcoming Octo Expansion. There have been a lot of sequels in the past that utilized assets/engines of their predecessors.

I agree, I'm pretty certain that will be the case.
