Its called a Dash Cancled Up Smash. It is performed by C-sticking down during a dash to perform a dash attack and immediatly pressing Z and up at the same time. You have about a 5 frame window to do this. If done properly he'll slide and up smash at the same time. If done wrong, he'll either do a dash attack, a grab, or a spazzed out down air.
Link has poor recovery, if he's knocked out far enough and at a low angle he isn't making it back. Don't beat yourself up over that.
