In my opinion the problem in the US is the separation of communities into race specific neighborhoods, or social classes. So people are not used to mixing together as much as they do in other countries and for example if you grow up in a white and wealthy neighborhood during your entire childhood, teen years and young adulthood you will have a tendency to distrust other people that are not white and wealthy cause you don't know them and you never see them.
