Yep, multiple hardware configurations that are part of a single ecosystem is what Nintendo needs and based on the things Iwata said in 2014 about wanting to adopt the strategy of Apple with iOS, i would say thats exactly what they plan on doing.
Apple has iPhone, iPad, iPod & Apple TV that belong to the iOS ecosystem and Nintendo could have a similar setup with Switch by adding a smaller, cheaper revision along with a bigger, more powerful revision and a microconsole revision.
Continue to upgrade each of these models every few years and you have a single evolving ecosystem going forward.
