Depending how this year goes, Sony might start thinking of a 2019 ps5 launch. Which will make PS4 6 years old by that point. |

So even despite the PS4 getting several high profile releases such as, and especially, Monster Hunter World, DragonBall Fighter Z, etc in January it still couldn't take first place, where as Switch had like almost nothing noteworthy in January and still beat everything else.
As someone said earlier in this thread, Switch hardware is still just selling itself basically if it can win that month still with almost nothing noteworthy. Fantastic sales for the Switch.

When did monster hunter become a major release in NA? And some are talking like the game is exclusive to the PS4 in NA.
How did the PS4 do in japan?

Monster Hunter World sold very well in the West. The brand has not traditionally moved units, doesn't mean it didn't with this specific release. Brand power can spike, it's happened before multiple times. And it wasn't exclusive to PS4 but Sony did have the marketing rights, the bundle, and has a far larger audience interested in Japanese games. Logically, nearly all benefit would go to PS4.
