I think the 2.9M figure comes from last fj. This year it was something like 1.9M end of calendar year.

Sony did not oversupply customers (of which Amazon is just one of many) this holiday season. It seems they are on the way to almost deplete retailer stock by end of this fj. This is the reason why they did not have any December fire sales - otherwise they would actually have depleted stock in the retail channel by now. And it also is not bad if you can make money on hardware with regular pricing.
