Except they aren't. They're two separately created games with entirely different code using the same world, story and characters.

I was going to say it's arbitrary to compare Splatoon 2 to both DQXI releases combined, but then I realized this entire comparison is arbitrary, especially since they aren't even in the same genre, lol

Accept it or not it doesn't change that they are as that's how DQXI was created, Dead Rising on Wii uses a different code and engine doesn't stop it being the same game.

Arbitrary how exactly? The sales comparison is seeing how Splatoon 2 measure's up to DQ's popularity in Japan I think you're well on the wrong track here.
