They do have the power to decide how much tax is levied on a product though don't they? A 10000% tax on guns would certainly shoot their price up!

Yes but the thing is there is still a large number of Americans that are pro gun and I don't think it's a good idea for the government to fuck them over. I think there should be a middle ground that benefits both sides.
