In all honesty. It's a couple of reasons.

- They nailed the marketing. They focused more on an older audience. That way they targeted what can be perceived as people who grew up with Nintendo. Kids want to emulate older teens anyway, because that's whats cool.
- One of the best launch games ever.
- Great positioning in the market. They were right in making it a hybrid system. It sets itself apart from both markets that way, but also fills them.
- Great software output first year. 1st, 3rd and indie software.
- All these points have the hype rolling. Hype is important.
