The Wii U did have backwards compatibility to the Wii Library. Meaning that Wii U owners can still play Wii games. If Wii U did not have BC, maybe the Wii U would have gotten HD ports of Wii Games.

Well Wii U did get Zelda TP HD, and Wii did get games like Zelda TP, Metroid 1/2, Pikmin 1/2, despite fact that Wii had BC for GC games.
