It should be the other way around. All figures companies give should be considered shipments unless they specifically state otherwise (as Sony sometimes do with their PS4 figures). Especially on their financial statements, those will always be shipped figures. And it's no wonder articles are saying it's sold, because it is sold. Shipped and sold in mean the same thing (sold to retailers) and are what companies typically refer to as "sold", sell through (sold to consumers) is rarely used by companies themselves and is instead what VGC/NPD/Media Create and the like use. Sell through is practically always estimates (albeit some less accurate than others *cough* vgc *cough*) because with a few exceptions (consoles that are completely sold out, or no longer produced) it's not really possible to have a 100% accurate figure of sell through from all the retailers across the world. Shipped however is easy for companies to track, they know exactly how many they've produced and sold to retailers and hence those are the figures they use in their financial reports. As well as being more accurate, shipped figures are also always higher (except completely sold out/no longer produced consoles again) so why would they want to give a lower figure if they had a higher one? If 14.86m was the sell through then Switch would definitely have shipped ov 15m, probably more like 15.5m, which would sound even more impressive, so why not use that? |
Spot on. Once it’s sold to retailers that’s sold.
