Kinda bittersweet for Sony, Microsoft and HD development in general. Capcom cancelled Monster Hunter Tri for the PS3 in 2008 for the same reasons why this game is a roaring success now.

Looking back at how I used to champion for this series to be on the Vita, mostly for the same fanboyish reasons people are posting today, I'm seeing that outside a hardware boost for that console, it still would have limited Monster Hunters true potential and appeal, especially in the West. This game will do for the wonders for the series.

That was political, if nothing else.

Nintendo handhelds were HUGE in Japan at the time. The DS was selling at a rate there that was completely unprecedented. It might have been the fastest selling product of all time in Japan, I'm not sure. Sales were crazy.

Capcom was looking at that, for the future.

Plus, the Wii was very big in Japan. And the PS3 was struggling in the beginning. It didn't make sense for them to go with PS3, for many reasons. Later on, the PSP kind of picked up a little bit, not nearly at the same level as the DS. And the PS3 ended up doing okay, later on. But by then Capcom settled with Nintendo for MHTri. And Nintendo actually published that game in the West.

Eventually Capcom got what they wanted, which was to launch the series on the 3DS.
