I think your just ignoring trends, you have 2 nintendo consoles that both received a 3d mario and 2d mario games, and they sold very close to each other, thats means its a trend.

Which 2 consoles exactly? The only trend you are seeing is 1 you cherrypicked. Pretty sure you wouldn't recognise a trend if it was sitting there right in front of you.
