Well after doing some digging, it is apparently normal. Bit of a disappointment but the thing is a beast. I played Halo 3 on it today and it looks unbelievable, so beautiful. I'll live with it hehe.

Jayward...just because some or even many people have it, doesn't mean it's normal and present on all consoles. If you still have the possibility to swap it, at least try it. I know the situation from some PC graphics cards, but it's also true some models are particularly known for it. I just don't want to believe it's "normal" as you put it.

Coil whine doesn't have anything to do with cooling though. It's more about power and electricity running through the coil at high workloads.

Here's some explanation by Linus

Sorry, I was assuming it was some sort of heat sink.

No need to apologise...it's not something commonly known among console users. It usually is more of a PC thing.
It's sadly not one single high pitched tone but a whirling tone that constantly changes at different workloads. It can get really annoying because of that. It doesn't blend in the general noise level. I returned a graphics card once and bought one from another manufacturer with a different board design (GTX 970).
