I don't think the lack of a trailer means any more than that they want to keep focus on The Last Jedi.  They wouldn't sabotage the movie even if they had less faith in it.

As for being in denial, the better explanation is that some of just know how the business works.

That's understandable, but it would be great if they released a trailer sometime this month.
