You clearly haven’t played the game, and center your opinion of it on the change from third person to first person gameplay.

Because I, too, have been a fan of the series since 1997, and VII is the closest to the roots the games have been since Code: Veronica.

Define "roots". I'm talking music, gameplay, puzzles, structure. I'm not talking themes. RE7 is Capcom going "Hmm, this game Outlast is doing well. I wonder if we slapped RE on top of something like that, if people would buy it again". And... you did. Bait taken. Goal accomplished.

When they make another game that PLAYS and FEELS like Code Veronica or RE 2, I'll jump right back on board. But part of me knows that is never going to happen.

You just confirmed what I already said. You have no idea what the game is and how it plays like. It is nothing like Outlast outside of the first person view. It follows the structure of past RE titles (with backtracking, no less), has the same kind of music and atmosphere, puzzles just like the rest of the series, etc. You even have a difficulty mode in which you need cassette tapes (which act the same way as ink ribbons) to save.

You point those elements out as those you wish to have in a RE game, yet they're all there. The only change is, again, the first person view. Which is clearly clouding your judgement about the game. Taking it for something it is not. Play it, and then come back to tell me I took a bait [lol].
