The most essential thing about chain attacks IMO is that they greatly increase your EXP gained from the enemy.  You just have to make sure the chain attack is the killing blow.

As an example, at level 89 I beat a level 90 without a chain attack: 3600 exp.  Did it with a chain attack without bursts: 15000 exp.  Did it with a chain attack that got to full burst: 53000 exp.

Didn't realize it gave more experience. I knew it gave you much better drops.
