The movie is doing fine. Thursday domestic numbers are up on Box Office Mojo. $168 domestic total for Week 2 (Dec. 22 - 28) as a whole. $464.7M total LTD. To put these figures into perspective: 1) It's the second-largest second full week of any movie ever after TFA. 2) It was a 43.3% week-over-week drop overall for the whole 7-day period, making it a smaller second-week drop than other notable big blockbusters with huge openings, e.g. The Avengers, Jurassic World, The Dark Knight, etc., though it was a larger drop than TFA and Rogue One. 3) However, it was actually up week-over-week every day this past Monday-Thursday period, grossing $96.53M for the 4-day period, vs. $76.6M for the same period last week, an increase of 26% (though to be fair Monday was Christmas, though it's also worth pointing up it did better on the 26th than on Christmas Day). It's highly unusual for a movie like this in the 21st century to experience week-over-week growth of any kind, much less in any of the four off-days. Even major holidays have only helped for that one day. To my knowledge, only Avatar did anything similar for a movie of this level of commercial success in the past 10-15 years. 4) TLJ's 4-day Mon.-Thur. gross was also 8% better than the same period for RO, and far outclassed everything else in the same period besides TFA. 5) It has now surpassed Attack of the Clones' inflation-adjusted lifetime gross, and is on track to pass Revenge of the Sith's and Rogue One's adjusted lifetime gross within a week (it just needs $75M more).
In short, claims that it's doing disappointing numbers are just flat out wrong, or at least premature. We'll have to see how its legs are. |
Thanks for the info.
