It's not as simple as "the next system a company releases belongs to the next collective generation". Because it is technically possible to re-enter the same generation again with a new system, if you so chose. Neo-Geo for example released a second Gen 4 system that was CD based, four years down the line, but it was meant to be a Gen 4 system with the same games. So what defines it in such cases? It's not necessarily an increase in power, because Pro and XB1X are Gen 8 systems currently. I'd say the games a system gets does. If the majority of the games a system gets belongs to say Generation 3, its a Generation 3 system.

But if there's another simple definition that works in both scenarios, I'm all ears to hear it.

Before it had a lot to do with the type of processors used... but I agree with you that for consoles and HH the generation could be defined by the library.
