| Goodnightmoon said: How can anybody believe this movie is bad but one where the galaxy is saved cause a random tribe of teddy bears think C3PO is God and kill the imperial enemies with rocks and stick is a masterpiece, now that's really beyond me. Many of you will realize you were just being very obtuse when judging this movie, it was a blast, it had a lot of risk and it was fantastically directed, some just need time to accept the changes it made, I recomend you to give it another watch in a year, I have already seen it twice and I see the same, a great movie for the franchise, and so do most people around me and almost every single professional critic. |
The rose tinted glasses of nostalgia. People complained about the Porgs being just merchandising, but WTF do they think we had Ewoks before?
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
It was a pretty good movie. Kylo got more backstory and is simply the best character of the new trilogy. I liked how Poe, Finn and Rose failed at their plan. Usually, heroes always do these insane plans with 0.0001% chance of success and get away with it. They failed hard and fell flat on their arses. Finn is evolving as a hero by accident while Poe finally gets some depth as character, as the impulsive guy that thinks he can solve all the problems of the world.
I enjoyed seeing the conflicted Luke. And it was nice to see his final trick (much better than the Legend's BS where he was god-like). It a total Jedi move, using the force in a non-violent way to achieve his objectives.
What I did not enjoy was Snoke. Zero backstory, just a random guy strong on the dark side that dies like an idiot. I understand that Palpatine also lacked any backstory until the prequels, but in the OG trilogy he had the clear intention of replacing Vader with an younger apprentice (Luke), while Vader wanted to betray him and get Luke as an apprentice. So he had reasons, objectives, plans. Snoke just showed up, wanted to kill Skywalker and be Emperor Part II. Palpatine also benefited from being a Sith, so the Jedi in the film explained to the audience what a Sith was and their motivations (like the Rule of Two). I have the impression that they created a huge expectation about who Snoke was and just could not think about anything decent. I do reckon that it was quite Sith-like to see the powerful master die by the hand of his apprentice in an act of treason.
I also can't really get Rey. She just unlocks new Force skills randomly. She basically learns nothing from Luke, just a few lessons. Even Luke got more stuff from Obi-Wan alone. I'm not complaining about her besting Kylo. He is conflicted, between the light and dark side. Snoke himself was trying hard to solve this by dragging him to the dark side, but he was not managing to do this. But high level stuff like mind reading is a bit to much for someone without training.
She also doesn't have anything really interesting. Kylo has the internal conflict and now we know that he actually turned to the dark side because of Luke failing him. Finn is the coward that ends up always redeeming himself. Rey? The only character she has is that she is powerful with the Force. They tried to make a scene with her and Snoke that was akin to Luke/Vader/Emperor face-off at Death Star 2, but honestly, Kylo saved that scene because he was the only of the 3 that actually has a character. Snoke was just a plot device to evolve Kylo.
While it may seem that I have plenty of complaints, they are mostly minor or affect only a single character. For me, the new trilogy is becoming movies about Kylo and not Rey. People complained about him being a crybaby and Vader-wannabe, but those were exactly part of his internal conflicts. He actually managed to do something Vader never was able to: replace his master.
