The PS4 is selling like this because of the X1 reveal. IMO.

That reveal was just an absolute disaster, they left the door wide open for Sony in all markets, even their tightly held US. So yeah... the PS4's Gimmick was Smartglass, TV integration, DDR3 memory, empty promises of cloud power (remember that?), always online, no more trading of games, Kinect always kinected (remember that?), moving all games from the console to Games for Windows Live 10, but yeah... for Sony the handy thing is, all those ideas were on the systems main rival.

I bought a PS3 after that reveal, and a PS4 soon after launch, after being a X360 fan all last gen.

This. Microsoft's huge fuck up at the beginning played a huge role in the PS4's start and how fast it gained momentum. Just look at Sony's E3 2013 and all the other stuff like the "How to borrow games" video they made, they used it to their advantage as much as possible because even they knew that Microsoft's terrible reveal event for the Xbox One gave them an easy start and advantage for the PS4 because all they had to say was "well we're not doing that stuff" that Microsoft said they were doing before they reversed it a while later.

It's not the only reason PS4 has been doing well obviously, but it did play a big part in how quickly the PS4 took off.

It may have helped, but PS4 was going to do solid numbers regardless. Considering that MS has long since backtracked on all their orignial XB1 poor design choices, that should’ve been able to turn things around sales wise and made XB1 more competive. Arguably, XB1 has little disadvantage to PS4 (outside of exclusive games), and yet it’s still getting outsold by a larger margin every year.
