Those were definitely not practical, regardless of what that video shows.  You can even tell they are CG in the one shot of them in the trailer for the film.  And they definitely aren't practical when you see them moving in the background on the salt planet.

I guess they might have used the creature exclusively as CG in the movie even though they did make a puppet. That's disappointing
